Support Brittney's Journey: Essential Care & Supplies

My name is Deaquelynn Williams, and I am the aunt and full-time caregiver of my niece, Brittney Williams.

In 2009, when Brittney turned 18, she experienced a severe sickle cell crisis that led to numerous complications. Over the span of several months in the hospital, she endured a coma lasting twelve weeks, multiple surgeries, heart failure, and being unconscious for over 40 minutes. These events resulted in a hypoxic brain injury that permanently altered her life.

Brittney went from being a vibrant teenager to returning home in a vegetative state—unable to walk, talk, or perform cognitive functions. Despite these challenges, her mother, siblings, and I provided her with needed care. Tragically, in December 2011, her mother passed away suddenly from a heart attack at just 38 years old. Since then, I have taken on the role of Brittney's full-time caregiver.

I manage all aspects of Brittney's care, including her daily needs, medical appointments, transportation, home health services, and more. When she turned 21, I discovered that many resources provided by state insurance were no longer available to her due to the timing of her brain injury. This has forced us to pay for many of her essential supplies and services out of pocket. Additionally, enrolling her in a day program or acquiring specialized equipment, like a Barton chair to assist with her mobility, requires significant funds that are beyond my reach.

Here are Brittney's current needs:

  • Barton chair (to assist with transfers in and out of bed)
  • Adult diapers (Attends, size M with tabs)
  • Bed pads (XL)
  • Wipe cloths (Prevail)
  • Twin sheet sets (size XL)
  • Toiletries: body wash, deodorant, lotion, Vaseline, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.
  • Hair clippers (for haircuts)
  • Acrylic storage containers with lids (for her port access supplies)
  • Gowns (size M)
  • Tube socks (size 9)
  • Sweat suits or shirt-and-bottom sets (size M)
  • White towels and washcloths
  • Nitrile gloves (size L)

A little about Brittney:

Before her brain injury, Brittney loved the color blue, enjoyed watching TV, and was passionate about praise dancing. Gospel music still seems to bring her moments of joy and connection. She has shown incredible resilience over the years—where she once couldn’t move her body at all, she now actively swings her legs and moves regularly.

I’ve decorated her room with butterflies and crosses, symbols of hope and faith, to create a peaceful and uplifting environment for her.

Your support would mean the world to us. Whether through donations, prayers, or sharing our story, any help you can provide would make a significant difference in Brittney’s care and quality of life.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Brittney and our journey. Your kindness and generosity are deeply appreciated.

Sincerely,
Deaquelynn Williams
